From the blog series, Unlocking Your Karmic Potential

There’s a growing awareness on the complexities of cording. Often, you’ll hear people refer to them as mainly negative. But the truth is, humans are cording machines. We do it all the time, every day. It’s a means of sharing energy with the world around us, after all.

The important point to note here is – when is it in right relationship, and when is it not?

As children, we are born into this world strongly attached to our parents, most especially our mother. We will spend many years (usually up to around 5) actually hanging out inside her auric field (or, a child may merge in a similar way into the field of their main caregiver).

Some healers believe there is a very clear time table of when the child leaves this field, but I have found there’s a bit more room in the window, influenced by individual reasons, karma and needs.

This powerful connection enables the parent to have that ‘sixth sense’ or ‘eyes in the back of your head’ needed to nurture and protect that child. The child also has a lot of growing to do energetically, and may need the parents support in this way to get their ‘sea legs’ here on Earth.

As we mature, when you are in a loving relationship with say a family member or dear one, you may see cording between you that is healthy and positive: there’s a flow of energy back and forth that joins you to one another, for instance between each person’s heart chakra.

Sometimes, though, it’s not set up equitably: I may see a cord going from one person’s 5th chakra to their partners 1st chakra, pulling a lot of energy and draining their loved one in an effort to shore up their own insufficient energy in that chakra.

When we see this kind of cording, we definitely want to take the steps to understand why this dynamic has been generated, to help the energy healing process. Ideally, the person being corded can heal what has made them vulnerable to this cording, and the person who corded can also seek to heal why they were needing that energy.

At the very least, you can always be the one who is conscious of your energy needs, and any vulnerabilities that you have — in this way, you can cultivate beneficial cording relationships.

Can’t I Just Cut That Cord?

Some people, and healers, are in the habit of ‘cutting cords’ often in efforts to solve problems being experienced — there’s a reason why I’m not an advocate of that.

If one isn’t clear as to why that cording is there, we may be creating a quick — and temporary — fix to what is actually a deeper problem (I’m hoping by now, if you’ve been reading previous  chapters, you’re thinking “What is the Root Cause, here?”).

Energetically, one may unintentionally be creating a vacuum where that cording was, if they have not rightly assessed the situation and taken care to resolve what created that cording in the first place.

Remember Julie in Chapter 6? Sometimes, that ‘clearing’ or ‘cutting of cords’ is not the right, or complete, answer if there is an underlying Root Cause at play that must be addressed.

Remember: often when we’re being affected by cording, or the following interference, we may not be able to easily to see anything tangible. You usually can, however, FEEL it.

Feeling tired, cranky or even confused after you’re in the presence of a specific person? This is a classic sign of cording, as well as Energy Vampires or Energy Pirates.

That’s right — we may have people around us who aren’t capable of generating their own energy, or in a worst case, don’t want to:

Energy Vampires vs Energy Pirates

You may have heard of the term ‘energy vampire’ before, however I like to discern between those and yet another kind, as there are different types and stages, and one can be far simpler to deal with than the other.

Energy Vampires actively interfere with you; they may be siphoning energy from you or may even attach to you (yes, this happens, though it’s more rare than some would think).

Energy Pirates, on the other hand, don’t really mean you ill-will, but they have their own issues and without realizing it, they may be siphoning energy off of you to compensate as needed.

This is where working with your Soul Guardian can be so helpful (we’ll explore them more in the next chapter!) — they can raise the flag to let you know that maybe that new friend is actually draining a lot of energy off you, giving you the ability to decide what you want to do about it.

A classic sign to look for is feeling unusually exhausted after being in the presence of someone. This is a big flag that they are pulling energy from you. Remember, they may not even realize it, so this is not an automatic reason to cut them out of your life, but definitely one to proceed with caution and take steps to protect your life force.

Another sign, usually preceding that fatigue, will be the inability to make clear choices with this person, or feeling unusually confused or agitated (this may and can linger for some time after being in their presence, especially in the case of an Energy Vampire). Maybe you know that what they ‘compel’ you to do is wrong, but you just can’t seem to stop it or say no. You feel as if this is all being forced on you in some way.

Never, ever, hand over your life force to another willingly. Never.

No one should have to siphon the energy off another in order to survive. It speaks to an imbalance through their energetic system, most likely on a karmic level – and they can find healing and bring this into right relationship. Giving and receiving is so much better than stealing and forcing.

It’s important to make note that there are also those of us, empaths, who tend to be far more vulnerable to both vampires and pirates, as well as cording. It’s vitally important that you learn where your ‘weak spots’ are, and address them both from the egoic perspective and the energetic. In this way, others cannot as easily trespass or steal from you.

Karmic Ghosts

Another potential form of cording or energy loss can occur through Karmic Ghosts. While somewhat more unusual, they do certainly exist and can wreak havoc in a person’s life (we visited this issue a bit in the prior post, Chapter 6: Understanding the Root Cause: what’s really influencing you?).

In order to understand a karmic ghost, we need to take a moment to define how a ghost comes into being. In a simplified breakdown: at the time of death, the energy body begins to separate from the physical one and leave the earth plane. Sometimes due to shock or trauma, confusion or sometimes even choice, however, it does not fully leave. There may be only a trace of energy that remains (sometimes called a ‘shell’), but a ghost will usually have some level of consciousness.

A Karmic Ghost – as I call them – is when, in an alternate life (or, what is commonly called a ‘past life’), your Karmic Sibling for whatever reason did not return to the other side at the time of death. They may linger here on Earth, in the area where they died, or in more challenging cases they may track lifetimes of their soul when there are incarnations with karma that attracts them.

An example of this would be someone like Kelly, who may very much want to be in a loving relationship, and yet they sabotage it every time — finding themselves suddenly feeling angry and trapped, irrationally cutting things off. Only to feel confused and shameful soon after, knowing that’s not really how they feel (and a growing frustration, with a list of angry and hurt ex-lovers, from this destructive behaviour). I found there was a karmic ghost in their field cording to them — one who was still reliving being horribly abused by their lover in their own lifetime, with staunch intentions to protect all their karmic siblings from ever having to ‘go through that again.’

In a situation like this, it’s very important to discern what is called for: there is healing that needs to happen often for both the karmic sibling (who ultimately is wounded themselves, with energy still stuck in the Earthly plane) and the person living their current lifetime who is experiencing the interference.

Most importantly, in every case I’ve seen so far, there’s a need for psychopomp intervention; such as with Kelly, where I helped their Karmic Ghost to fully crossover and return to the Other Side, releasing their agenda to try and control the relationships of those in their karmic constellation. Then, all can truly live in peace and thrive (and in Kelly’s case, find lasting love!).
